Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is the 4th entry, and the 3rd main entry in the Guitar Hero series. The game is the successor to the successful predecessor Guitar Hero II. It's the first Guitar Hero game developed by Neversoft, as RedOctane was purchased by Activision, while the developers of Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, and Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s Harmonix was purchased by a different company. They went on to develop Rock Band. The Wii and PS2 versions of Guitar Hero III were developed by Vicarious Visions and BudCat Creations respectively. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock was released on the XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, Wii and the PlayStation 2 on October 28, 2007. And later released on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X on November 13, 2007 and December 10, 2007 respectively.

Like Guitar Hero II, Activision managed to get licenses to even more popular and iconic songs than last time, and is considered to have the best song list in the series, according to fans. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock shipped with 73 songs. And for the first time in the series, the game has more master recordings than covers compared to its predecessors.
