Soundgarden was an American rock band formed in 1984 by Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto. The band was fully completed after the arrival of Scott Sundquist, being replaced by Matt Cameron. In 1989, Yamamoto left the band and he was replaced by Jason Everman, having a brief stint in the band until being replaced by Ben Shepherd. The band took a break in 1997 and only returned in 2010, lasting until Chris Cornell's death 7 years later. Thayil announced the band's disbandment following the news about Cornell. The band was active in 2018 and 2019 paying tribute to the band's leader.

Christopher John Cornell (July 20, 1964 – May 18, 2017) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the rock bands in both Soundgarden and Audioslave, and for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions.
