Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023) was an American-born and naturalized Swiss singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and author. Considered as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", she began her musical career as member of the group Kings of Rhythm in 1957 under the name Little Ann. Later, she and Ike Turner formed the American R&B duo Ike & Tina Turner Revue (later changed to Ike & Tina Turner) and she was the frontwoman between 1960 and 1976.
Among the duo's other hits, the most popular hits are "A Fool in Love", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "River Deep – Mountain High", a cover version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song "Proud Mary", and "Nutbush City Limits".
Turner had already gone solo in 1974, two years before he left the duo. But in the 1980s, he lived his golden age in music: the critically acclaimed "Private Dancer" album featuring the 1984 Grammy Award-winning single "What's Love Got Do To With It". In addition, the song was #1 on the US charts for quite some time. Other songs were also successful, such as "Better Be Good to Me", "Private Dancer", "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" - which was the soundtrack to the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, "Typical Male", "The Best", "I Don't Wanna Fight", and "GoldenEye". During her Break Every Rule World Tour in 1988, she set a then-Guinness World Record for the largest paying audience (180,000) for a solo performer. Tina Turner retired the music career in 2009 after completing her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour.
Turner has appeared in several films and documentaries. Among them, the most famous and popular "Tommy" (1975) and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985). In 1993, "What's Love Got to Do with It", a biographical film adapted from her autobiography "I, Tina: My Life Story", was released. In 2009,
Tuna left an important legacy in music. Despite having sold over 100 million records worldwide, Tina has become one of the best-selling artists of all time. She won 12 Grammy Awards, in addition to having 3 Grammy Hall of Fame Awards and 1 Grammy Lifetime Award. She was the 1st black artist and 1st woman to be on the cover of the traditional Rolling Stone magazine and this same magazine included Turner among the 100 best artists of all time and also among the 100 singers of all time. She had a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Also, Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: in 1991 as a member of the duo Ike & Tina Turner and in 2021 as a solo artist. Tina was also a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors and Women of the Year award in 2005.
